Bangladesh ends T-20 campaign with another dismal batting display

Bangladesh ended another T20 World Cup campaign with little to cheer about. They showed another dismal batting display in their last Super 12 match against Pakistan and lost by a big margin of five wickets on Sunday in Adelaide. While Bangladesh ended the World Cup with only two wins, Pakistan marched to the semifinals as the second team after India from Group 2.

Pakistan had to chase down a target of 128 and they did it with ease. They have lost some important wickets occasionally, but that did not harm their chase. Mohammad Rizwan led the charge by scoring 32, while Mohammad Haris posted 31. Nasum Ahmed, Shakib Al Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, and Ebadot Hossain each bagged a wicket for Bangladesh.

Opting to bat first, Bangladesh posted a moderately below-par total of 127 for 8 wickets, with Najmul Hossain Shanto registering a slow 54 off 48 balls. Shanto and Liton Das opened the innings for the Tigers in this match, and Liton hit an early six, showing the Tigers' positive intent in batting. But he lost his wicket to Shaheen Afridi inside the powerplay for 10 off eight balls. It was a short ball from Shaheen, and Liton tried to pull it off but ended up giving a regulation catch to Shan Masood.

Bangladesh didn't lose any more wickets in the first 10 overs, but in the 11th over, they suffered a double blow when Soumya Sarkar fell while playing a reverse sweep off Shadab Khan. Off the next ball, Shakib suffered a controversial lbw. TV replays showed the ball was touching Shakib's bat before hitting his pads, and the bat was not grounded either. But the umpire called him out. Shakib left the field in utter disbelief with a golden duck that put Bangladesh into further trouble.

Mosaddek Hossain made only five off 11 balls, and Nurul Hasan Sohan also suffered a three-ball duck. Their dismissals made it tough for Bangladesh to go for a big total. But Afif Hossain was unbeaten for 24* off 20 balls. He helped Bangladesh pass the 100-run mark in this match. Eventually, Bangladesh ended up on 127 for eight. For Pakistan, Shaheen bagged four wickets, conceding 22 runs, while Shadab bagged two.

This match came as a great chance for both Bangladesh and Pakistan to qualify for the semifinals. Pakistan made use of it with both hands, but Bangladesh failed in every way. They failed to bat well, they failed to field well, and they failed to bowl well too.

Throughout the event, Bangladeshi batters performed miserably in the middle. Their last Super 12s match of the T20 World Cup against Pakistan was no different. If the batters could have done better, Bangladesh might have ended the World Cup with a better outcome. In contrast, Pakistan made a brilliant comeback in the last two matches after a poor start and advanced to the semifinals by overcoming Bangladesh by five wickets in Adelaide.

No Tamim Iqbal as Bangladesh announce World Cup squad; Mahmudullah included

Publish: 09:01 PM, 26 Sep, 2023

Bangladesh's veteran opening batter, Tamim Iqbal, has been omitted from the 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, as announced by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday. Meanwhile, experienced batter Mahmudullah has secured his spot in the team.

The squad selection process generated considerable discussion, with several players being automatic choices. Tamim Iqbal, despite not being in peak physical condition, seemed like a surefire inclusion, especially after his confident return to international cricket with a fluent 44 against New Zealand.

However, reports emerged in local media just a day before the squad announcement, suggesting that Tamim had informed the management of his inability to play in all nine group matches of the tournament due to his fitness concerns. These reports reportedly left Shakib Al Hasan, the team's star all-rounder and captain, dissatisfied, even to the point where he contemplated stepping down as captain. Ultimately, the selectors decided against picking Tamim.

In a noteworthy development, Nafees Iqbal, Tamim's elder brother and the team's logistics manager, left the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium during Bangladesh's third ODI against New Zealand, and it appears he was removed from his post at Shakib's request.

The squad features some fresh faces as well, with Tanzid Hasan, who made his international debut in the recently-concluded Asia Cup, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib, the promising fast bowler who impressed in his debut against India in the Asia Cup, earning their spots.

Bangladesh used the ongoing New Zealand series as an opportunity to experiment and assess potential options for the World Cup. Unlike most other teams, the selectors refrained from announcing a provisional squad, keeping fans and experts in suspense until just a couple of days before the ICC's deadline.

Mahmudullah, who had been absent from the ODI side for a considerable period, finally earned a place in the team after lower-order batters failed to make their mark in recent series. Mahmudullah's performance in the New Zealand series proved crucial, as he top-scored with a 76-ball-49 in the second ODI amid a batting collapse.

The spin duo of Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan also secured their spots in the squad after delivering strong performances in the latter part of the Asia Cup and the early stages of the New Zealand ODIs.

Soumya Sarkar, on the other hand, auditioned for a role but struggled, recording a duck in the second ODI against New Zealand before being dropped from the squad for the third game.

The finalized squad for the World Cup comprises the following players: Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim (wicketkeeper), Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Tanzid Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib.

Morocco playing seven games at one World Cup is priceless: Regragui

Publish: 03:13 PM, 17 Dec, 2022

Morocco may not have reached the World Cup final but the players and supporters can take pride in the fact that they will leave Qatar having played seven games, a first for any African nation, coach Walid Regragui said on Friday.

Morocco's dream run at the World Cup ended when they were beaten by reigning champions France in the semi-finals but they still have the opportunity to leave Qatar on a high when they take on Croatia in the third-place playoff on Saturday.

Regragui said he would not make too many changes to the squad as that would upset the team balance but admitted it was a difficult and complicated game for two teams being asked to play after the disappointment of losing their semi-final matches.

"I understand it's important to finish third rather than fourth, but my takeaway is we didn't reach the final... We wanted to play the final on Sunday, not play tomorrow," Regragui said.

"But I told my players this is our seventh World Cup game. If you told any Morocco fan we would be playing our seventh game on December 17, they would be proud.

"Morocco played six World Cup games in 20-odd years and now we've played six games in a month - this is priceless. It's as if we played two World Cups or even more, that's beautiful from an experience point of view."

Regragui said Croatia were a formidable team even if they had not been favoured to repeat their 2018 run, when they finished runners-up in Russia. Their dreams were crushed by Lionel Messi's Argentina in the semi-final.

"We knew Croatia were going to be one of the best teams in the competition. After the first game (where Morocco and Croatia drew 0-0 in the group stage) we knew the performance was very good," Regragui said.

"A lot of people said Croatia were approaching the end of their cycle and would have the rug swept out from under their feet. Croatia got stick for not beating 'underdogs' Morocco but both teams reached the semi-final.

"There was a lot of hesitation for the first game... Both teams will want to win it (on Saturday) and it will be a great game."

The game could be Croatian midfielder Luka Modric's last with the national team and Regragui praised the Real Madrid man who is still going strong at 37.

"I don't know if it's Modric's last game, he's a competitive warrior and will want to finish his World Cup in style. When he wants to finish on a great note, we should be wary," Regragui said.

"Hats off to Modric. What he's doing at 37 is monumental. He was a Ballon d'Or winner and I completely understand why."
