Mother Courage, the pioneer of women's awakening in the
country, poet Sufia Kamal. Today is the 110th birthday of this dreamer of
building a progressive society. She was born on 20 June 1911 in Shaistabad,
Barisal. This majestic woman has struggled against communalism and
fundamentalism all her life along with the practice of free will. Besides
literature, she has played a special role in the democratic movement and
struggle.
President MD Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
have issued separate messages on the occasion of Sufia Kamal's birthday. In the
message, on the birth anniversary of Sufia Kamal, one of the pioneers of
women's awakening, they wished deep respect to her memory and forgiveness of
the soul.
After the partition of the country in 1947, Sufia Kamal
moved with her family from Calcutta to Dhaka. She took an active part in the
language movement and inspired women in this movement. In 1956, she established
the children's organization, Kachikanchar Mela.
She was involved in a protest movement against the ban on
Rabindra Sangeet by the Pakistani government in 1961 and was elected president
of Chayanat.
In 1969, Sufia Kamal was elected president of the Women's
Struggle Committee and took part in the mass uprising. In 1970, she established
the Mahila Parishad. In March 1971, she led a women's procession in the
non-cooperation movement. During the war of liberation, she helped the freedom
fighters from his Dhanmondi residence. She also played a brilliant role in the
struggle for women's awakening and the establishment of equal rights for women in
independent Bangladesh.
In 1990, she took out a silent procession, ignoring the
curfew and participating in the anti-authoritarian movement. She has fought all
her life against communalism and fundamentalism. Sufia Kamal has taken part in
every progressive movement.
Until her death, she inspired politicians, writers, and
cultural activists. Her creativity in literature was unforgettable. In addition
to children's writing, her writings on various topics including country,
nature, democracy, social reform, and women's liberation still arouse and inspire
the reader.

Prithibi, etc. are her notable books of poetry. Also one of her travels and
memoirs is Sovieter Dinguli and Ekattorer diary.
Sufia Kamal has won more than 50 awards at home and abroad.
Notable among them are Bangla Academy Award, Soviet Lenin Medal, Ekushey Medal,
Begum Rokeya Medal, National Poetry Council Award, and Independence Day Medal.
Sufia Kamal died of old age on Saturday morning, November
20, 1999. She was buried at Azimpur Cemetery as per his wish with full state
dignity.
