Trawler sinks in Dhaleshwari river, 10 missing

A passenger trawler sank after being hit by a launch in the Dhaleshwari river in Dharmaganj area of Fatulla police station in Narayanganj. 10 passengers are missing. Members of the Coast Guard and Fire Service are conducting a rescue operation. The accident happened on Wednesday (January 5).

Abdullah Al Arefin, Deputy Assistant Director, Narayanganj Fire Service, and Civil Defense, confirmed the matter.

He said the trawler was going to Dharmaganj ghat from Baktabali ghat with passengers. The trawler collided with the passenger launch as it could not be seen clearly due to dense fog. Immediately the trawler sank in the river.

He said most of the passengers were able to swim ashore but at least 10 passengers were still missing.

Abdullah Al Arefin further said that after receiving the news, the rescue workers of the fire service went to the spot and started the rescue operation. However, the whereabouts of the missing trawler could not be ascertained till 11:45 pm. Most of the passengers in the trawler were garment workers.

Relatives are crowding the shores of Dhaleshwari in search of the missing after the accident.
