The Maritime Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
has found the existence of gas hydrate in the Bay of Bengal.
The head of the research unit Khurshid Alam made the
disclosure at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on
Wednesday. The foreign minister and the state minister were also present at the
time.
Khurshid Alam said, "We have not been able to survey
the whole area yet. However, as far as we are concerned, we estimate that about
17 to 103 trillion cubic TCF gas hydrates are over there."
He said that the gas hydrant is solidified methane gas.
Besides, there is huge potential for commercial production
and processing of seaweed in the Bay of Bengal, said the ministry after
conducting research.
With the help of the Netherland and the UK, both of the researches
were conducted in coordination with concerned ministries.
