Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is the second most
polluted city in the world.
At 11 am on Tuesday (January 11), Dhaka's Air Quality Index
(AQI) was recorded at 200, indicating that the air quality as
"unhealthy".
China's Wuhan tops the list with a score of 218 AQI and
India's Kolkata ranks third with a score of 193.
An AQI score of 151 to 200 can affect the health of everyone
in the city, especially children, the elderly and the sick. Similarly, if the
AQI score is 201 to 300, it is considered as an emergency with health alert. In
this case, children, the elderly and the sick are advised to limit their
activities inside the house and others are advised to limit outdoor activities.
The AQI index, based on daily air quality, informs people
about the clean or polluted air in a particular city and any health risks that
may arise for them.
AQI in Bangladesh is determined based on five types of
pollution - particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and ozone (O3).
