SUST students threatened death hunger strike demanding resignation of Vice Chancellor

Students have threatened to go on a hunger strike to demand the resignation of Farid Uddin Ahmed, vice-chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet. Protesting against the one-point demand on Tuesday (January 18), the agitating students have given the Vice-Chancellor till 12 noon today to resign. The students have announced a hunger strike if he does not resign.

Mohaiminul Bashar, a fourth year student of the university, made the announcement on behalf of the agitating students last night.

Ordinary students said they had been angry for a long time over multiple "unfair" decisions, including not giving any concessions in mess rates despite the university being closed for a long time. After the students in the hall started protesting, the anger spread among the students.

Meanwhile, in the incident of attacking and firing on students on Sunday, the police have filed a case against 200 to 300 students as anonymous. The accused have been charged with obstruction of police work, cocktail explosion, shooting and assault with intent to kill a policeman. The case was registered at Jalalabad police station on Monday night.

Regarding the case, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Mohammad Azbahar Ali said, "No one will be harassed in this case." So there is nothing to worry for anyone. Students are not being arrested. Police fired shots at the incident that day, police members were injured, the case had to be made to show these. However, no one was named in the case. There is no description of anyone's name or incident in the statement.

However, the statement of the case said that 200-300 unruly students suddenly attacked the police. Tried to grab and snatch the official firearms of on duty police. They hurled brickbats at the police. Exploded cocktails on police, causing panic on campus. Police fired 31 shotguns and 21 sound grenades to control the situation.
