Last year, there were 5,629 road accidents in 2021, despite
the closure of public transport for 85 days to control corona infection. It has
killed 7,809 people. Besides, 9,039 people were injured in these accidents.
In the previous year, 6,686 people were killed in 4,891 road
accidents. And 8,600 people were injured.
This information was given by the Secretary General of
Bangladesh Passengers Welfare Association Md. Mozammel Haque Chowdhury at a
press conference held at Sagar Runi Auditorium of Dhaka Reporters Unity on
Sunday (January 23) at 11:30 am. At this time, he published the annual road
accident report-2021.
The organization's annual accident watchdog also noted that
396 people were killed on the railways and 311 on the waterways during the same
period. Roads, railways, waterways - a total of 8,516 people were killed and
9,751 injured.
Mozammel Haque pointed out several causes of road accidents,
including reckless speed, dangerous overtaking, road errors, unfit vehicles,
carelessness of passengers and pedestrians, and driver incompetence.
Also present at today's press conference were former FBCCI
president Abdul Haque, human rights activist Nur Khan Liton, Bangladesh
University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) professor Dr Hadiuzzaman and
others.
