105 former BCL leaders of Shahjalal University of Science
and Technology (SUST) have demanded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take
necessary steps to accept the just demands of the agitating students demanding
the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed.
The call was made in a statement after an emergency virtual
meeting of former leaders of SUST Chhatra League on Saturday.
Three demands were made to the Prime Minister, urging her to
take immediate steps to resolve the crisis in the student movement. In the
notification, they demanded to take immediate steps to break the hunger strike
of the agitating students and accept their just demands.
Apart from this, the BCL leaders demanded that action be
taken against those who has created an environment for police to attack the
agitating students and to immediately withdraw the assault case filed by the
police against the students.
The meeting was attended by the leaders and workers of the
last batch starting from the first batch of SUST former Chhatra League. The
four-hour long meeting discussed the campus situation in detail. In this,
everyone expressed sympathy towards the agitating students.
In the anti-provost movement that started on the night of
January 13, and on January 16, police fired batons, rubber bullets and sound
grenades. 30 students were injured and after that the demand for resignation of
the Vice-Chancellor arose. Authorities closed the university and ordered
students to leave the hall. However, rejecting this decision, the students have
continued their agitation including death hunger strike demanding the
resignation of the Vice-Chancellor.
