Historic Mass Uprising day today

On January 24, 1969, the students and the people of this country started a new horizon in the struggle for the rights of the masses. From the city to the village resounds all over Bengal, 11 point demands must be met. Today is the day of that historic mass uprising. This mass uprising was a milestone in achieving our independence.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the historic 6 points in 1966 to liberate the Bengali nation from colonial Pakistani rule, exploitation and deprivation. This intensified the freedom movement. The Pakistani ruling class arrested Bangabandhu by filing a conspiracy case in Agartala with the intention of thwarting the movement. Students, workers and people across the country formed a fierce movement against this case.

On 19 January 1969, the agitating masses marched in violation of section 144 to overthrow the Pakistani military rule.

Matiur Rahman, a ninth grade student of Nabakumar Institution, was shot dead by police during the procession. In this incident, the student crowd became angrier and a mass uprising was created. The dictatorial Ayub government was forced to release all including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the main accused in the Agartala conspiracy case, in the wake of public outrage and mass uprising. The dictatorship of Ayub Khan fell. In a week-long movement, the dictatorial government retreated on 24 January. This day has been celebrated as the day of mass uprising since 1970, keeping the memory of that day.

Various programs have been taken by various political, social and cultural organizations on the occasion of the day.
