The University Teachers Network has called for a symbolic
hunger strike in support of the student movement of Shahjalal University of
Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet demanding the resignation of Vice
Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed. The organization will go on a symbolic hunger
strike at Aparajeyo Bangla of Dhaka University from 12 noon on Monday (January
24).
Samina Lutfa, an associate professor of the Department of
Sociology at Dhaka University, said this in a press release sent to the media
on behalf of the Teachers Network.
The notification said that, the teachers 'network has
decided to go on a symbolic hunger strike at the foot of the Aparajeyo Bangla of
Dhaka University from 12 noon to 3 pm today in protest of the attack on
Shahjalal University of Science and Technology for several days, demanding
protection of students' lives and their just demands.
Rushad Faridi, an assistant professor in the economics
department of Dhaka University, one of the members of the teachers' network,
said, "We will decide whether we will continue the hunger strike or not
after seeing the current situation."
Incidentally, Shahjalal University has been agitating for 11
days in the student movement. As the demands were not met in the first six days
of the movement, several students went on a hunger strike in front of the
Vice-Chancellor's residence from 3 pm on Wednesday.
