The hunger strike of students of Shahjalal University of Science
and Technology (SUST) has finally broken. The students broke their fast after
seven days. Prof. Dr. Zafar Iqbal and his wife Yasmin Haque spoke to the
students shortly after their arrival at SUST campus on Wednesday morning and
the students agreed to break their fast. Then 11 students were brought from the
hospital. The fast was broken around 10:30 am. But the Awami League politicians
had an important role in breaking this hunger strike.
When the Ministry of Education could not stop the movement
and there was no progress in breaking the hunger strike, when the students
refused to meet the Minister of Education, a political party of Awami League
took this initiative on the instructions of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Some
leaders of the Awami League under the leadership of Jahangir Kabir Nanak played
an important role in resolving the crisis of Shahjalal University and they used
to talk to the students, teachers and other quarters. After talking with
various people, Jahangir Kabir Nanak informed the Prime Minister that a
solution to this crisis would be possible only if Dr. Zafar Iqbal could be
taken to Shahjalal University.
After receiving the green signal from the Prime Minister,
Jahangir Kabir Nanak led by Deputy Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury,
Awami League central leader Asim Kumar Ukil and Subhash Singh Roy visited the
house of Professor Zafar Iqbal yesterday. There he discussed the whole
situation with Zafar Iqbal and was finally able to persuade Zafar Iqbal to go
to Sylhet. Zafar Iqbal told a press conference today that some Awami League
leaders came to his house.
