English daily 'The Independent' has shut down permanently

Although at the beginning of the Corona epidemic English daily ‘The Independent’ was temporarily closed, but this time it is shut down permanently. The final decision was announced on Sunday (January 30) in the presence of all parties concerned with the newspaper.

The executive editor of the newspaper Shamim A. Jahedi has confirmed the matter.

Shamim A Jahedi told the media that The Independent newspaper will be permanently closed from today. It is our owner's decision. Our Editor-in-Chief M Shamsur Rahman held a meeting today and informed everyone.

He also said that all the arrears of salary would be paid as per the rules of the newspaper.

The Independent started its journey on March 26, 1995. Independent is one of the few media outlets launched by Independent Publications Limited, a company of Beximco Group, one of the country's leading industrial groups. In the same year, Beximco Group entered the publishing world by publishing two magazines called Shaily and Anandabhuban and Bangla Daily Muktakantha besides Independent.

But the magazines that lagged behind in the competitive market became less important for Beximco at one time. The daily muktakantha and Shaily stopped. Later Anandabhuban followed the same path. Much later, the company's television station, Independent Television, which started in 2010, survives.
