Voting for the seventh and final phase of the Union Parishad
elections has begun. The polling has started in 138 UPs in 26 upazilas of 20
districts of the country. Voting will continue till 4 pm. With the completion
of today's voting process, the ongoing UP elections across the country will
come to an end.
The Election Commission (EC) had announced the schedule for
this phase of elections on December 29 last year.
It is learned that 11 chairmen, 12 reserved members and 46
general members have been elected unopposed in this phase. Voting is going on for
the remaining posts.
EC officials said that various steps have been taken to make
the last phase of UP election smooth. Additional members of law enforcers have
been deployed in some upazilas. There is a mobile force consisting of police
and APBN in each union and a striking force in every three unions. RAB has two
mobile teams and a striking force in each upazila. Each upazila has two BGB
mobile teams, one Striking Force and one Coast Guard member in the coastal
upazilas. Besides, there are executive and judicial magistrates in the field.
