Today is Sundarbans Day. This day is being celebrated on 14th February every year with the aim of creating public awareness on the conservation of biodiversity in the Sundarbans. The Sundarbans is the largest mangrove forest in the world. It is one of the largest natural wonders of the world. This mangrove forest is the pride of Bangladesh. Not only Bangladesh, but the whole world wants the Sundarbans to survive for many years.

The first National Sundarbans Conference was held on 14 February 2001 under the Bangladesh Environmental Movement at the initiative of Khulna University, Khulna voluntary organization Rupantar, Parsh and with the participation of 70 more environmental organizations of the country. At that conference, February 14 was declared as 'Sundarbans Day'.

For more than two decades, the Sundarbans Academy has been organizing various Sundarbans Day programs in Khulna and other Sundarbans districts to protect the biodiversity and unique natural resources of the Sundarbans.

The Sundarbans is home to 5,000 species of plants, about 50 species of mammals, 50 species of reptiles, 320 species of birds, 8 species of amphibians and 400 species of fish. The Royal Bengal Tiger is world famous among the mammals of the Sundarbans. There are also Chitra and Maya deer, monkeys, wildcats, leopards, rabbits and wild boars. There are all kinds of birds here. Sundarbans reptiles include crocodiles, snakes, lizards and more.

The world heritage Sundarbans is under threat today due to the constant aggression of foresters. The environment of the whole country including the south-western region is closely associated with the Sundarbans.
