The State Department appears to have been putting constant
pressure on Bangladesh over labor laws, digital security laws, human rights,
and so on.
The State Department presented a report on relations with
the United States at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on
Foreign Affairs in the National Assembly on Monday (February 14th).
According to sources, the ministry further informed the
parliamentary committee that the government has started efforts to lift the US
embargo on seven current and former officers of the RAB and the force. To this
end, the United States is in the process of hiring a lawyer.
Sources further said that in the context of 'continuous
pressure' from the United States on Bangladesh, the State Department said that
the government has taken several steps after the United States abolished the
Preferred Markets (GSP) of Bangladesh. However, the United States did not
return the GSP facility to Bangladesh.
In the last 20 years, there has been no bilateral visit
between Bangladesh and the United States at the level of President or Prime
Minister. However, strong diplomatic efforts are being made to organize a
high-level visit to mark the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh-US relations this
year.

According to meeting sources, the State Department's report
states that the US sanctions have created major challenges in relations between
the two countries. The United States has been told by Bangladesh's ambassador
to Washington that the government is unhappy with the ban. Besides, the process
of appointing a lawyer in the United States is on.
Through various bilateral contacts and close discussions
with the country, attempts are being made to send a message to the US
government that Bangladesh's law enforcement is not violating human rights;
Rather, it is working to protect human rights. As a result, the US embargo was
not appropriate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bangladesh Embassy in
Washington are working on this.
After the meeting, committee chairman Muhammad Farooq Khan
told reporters that US sanctions were discussed at the meeting. Earlier, a
parliamentary committee had called for the appointment of a lobbyist. The
ministry also said that the PR firm would hire a lawyer.
After the meeting, a statement from the Parliament
Secretariat said that Bangladesh-US bilateral relations and challenges were
discussed in detail. It is recommended that Bangladesh missions deployed in
different countries, including the United States, play a more responsible role.
The meeting was chaired by Farooq Khan and was attended by
members of the committee, including Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, State
Minister Mohammad Shahriar Alam, Nurul Islam Nahid, Mohammad Abdul Majid Khan,
Mohammad Habibe Millat and Nahim Razzak.
