For a long time, a section of the civil society has been
demanding the publication of the names proposed in the search committee in the
process of formation of the Election Commission (EC). In response to that demand,
a list of proposed names was published in the search committee last Monday
(February 14), which contains the names of 322 people. As a result, political
analysts believe that much of the controversy surrounding the activities of the
search committee and the transparency of the first election commission to be
formed through legislation has subsided.
Following the demands of the civil society and several
political parties, the law for the formation of the EC was first enacted in the
form of their proposed law and it was passed in the Parliament. After the
enactment of the law, the demand for disclosure of the proposed name was made
by the civil society. Through this, the pro-BNP civil society adopted a
strategy of putting pressure on the government and disputing the new election
commission. But as a result of the courageous steps and actions of the search
committee, that strategy has come to a standstill.
Now the question is, what is the new demand of the civil
society to debate the Election Commission? For so long, a section of the civil
society has been saying that the demand for publishing the name is the main
demand. As such, there is no room for debate on the newly formed Election
Commission. As a result, it remains to be seen whether the civil society will
resort to any new tactics or make any new demands this time to make the
Election Commission controversial.
