Russia has threatened to take action against Finland and
Sweden if they attempt to join NATO, the Western military alliance.
Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned
against other countries attempting to join NATO after Russia started a war with
Ukraine on Thursday, reports BBC.
“Finland and Sweden should not base their security on
damaging the security of other countries and their accession to NATO can have
detrimental consequences and face some military and political consequences,”
Zakharova said in a viral clip of a press conference.
Finland helps NATO in some cases. The country also attended
a meeting of the military alliance in Brussels on Thursday. However, Finland
has not officially joined NATO.
Last month, Finnish Prime Minister Sana Marin said Finland
was unlikely to join NATO during his term.
