US Secretary of State Dr. AK Abdul Momen has called on US
lawmakers to lift the ban on the RAB. He made the request in several meetings
with US lawmakers.
During his visit to the United States, Dr. Momen had
separate meetings with U.S. Congresswoman Grace Meng, Congressman James P.
McGovern, and Tom Lantos, vice president of the Human Rights Commission.
During the meeting, Foreign Minister Dr. Momen expressed
concern over the recent US sanctions on seven current and former senior RAB
officials. He told US lawmakers that Bangladesh was always ready to deal with
specific allegations against RAB members.
He mentioned that RAB has emerged as the most efficient law
enforcement agency in Bangladesh in recent years. They have played a leading
role in combating terrorism, violent extremism, drug-trafficking and other
international crimes.
The Foreign Minister also mentioned the interest of the
Government of Bangladesh in working closely with the United States to find a
way to lift the ban on RAB officers on priority basis. He sought the
cooperation of the US Congress for this purpose.
Dr. Momen invited the Congress delegation to visit
Bangladesh to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic
relations between Bangladesh and the United States.
Dr. Momen visited New York from February 23 to March 2 to
attend the official meeting of the United Nations.
