Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said on Tuesday
night that he had left the door open for talks. Even now, they are falling
short of the enthusiasm shown by their country to join NATO.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.
Russian forces then launched a missile attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kiev,
destroyed various air bases and important installations.
The attack continued on Wednesday for the 14th day. Russian
and Ukrainian officials held two rounds of meetings on the Belarusian border to
end the fighting. However, the two meetings did not work.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine was one of the main and
sensitive reasons for Jelensky's 'willingness' to become a NATO member. On
Tuesday, however, Zelensky said that in the current situation, he and his
country are moving away from the demand for NATO membership.
On the other hand, with the consent of Moscow, the Ukrainian
president agreed to discuss the Donbas region in the eastern part of Ukraine,
the Luhansk and Donetsk regions, which are mainly known as 'Russian rebel
areas' within the country. Notably, on February 24, before the invasion of
Ukraine, the two regions were declared 'independent' Russian territories.
Jelensky quipped that no country other than the
'pseudo-republic' Russia had recognized the Luhansk and Donetsk regions as
independent states. But now that the Ukrainian president has spoken out, 'NATO
is not ready to accept Ukraine. I calmed down a lot after realizing this. The
NATO alliance is now afraid to accept us because they do not want to go into
direct enmity with Russia.'
According to Zelensky, he does not want to be known as the
president of a country that is on its knees begging for something. 'I want to
talk about security,' he said. However, we can also talk about declaring the
Luhansk and Donetsk regions as republics of Russia.
Russia has been opposed to Ukraine's accession to NATO since
the beginning of the year. This is because Moscow sees Ukraine's accession to
NATO as a big warning to its security. However, Kiev's withdrawal from this
position is a clear indication of the end of the war between the two countries.
