A Dhaka court has sentenced two members of
Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) to jail and acquitted six others in a
case filed over bomb explosions in front of Hossaini Dalan in old Dhaka when
members of the Shia community were gathering at the building on the occasion of
Holy Ashura.
Judge Mojibur Rahman of the Special Anti-Terrorism Tribunal
in Dhaka passed the order on Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the accused were produced before the
court at 11:23 am.
Earlier on March 1, the tribunal fixed March 15 to announce
the verdict.
On the night of October 23, 2015, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen
Bangladesh (JMB) militants carried out a bomb attack around 1:30 am when
members of the Shia community were gathering at the building, about half an
hour before the traditional Tajia procession was to be brought out from there
to mark the holy Ashura.
SI of the Chawkbazar police station Jalal Uddin filed a case
in this regard. The case was first investigated by Chawkbazar police and then
transferred to DB. After the investigation, DB South police inspector
Shafiuddin Sheikh submitted a chargesheet in the court against 10 militants in
October 2016.
The case was then transferred to the Additional Metropolitan
Sessions Judge's Court-8 in Dhaka.
The accused in the case are - Kabir Hossain, Rubel Islam,
Abu Saeed, Arman, Hafeez Ahsan Ullah Masud, Shah Jalal, Omar Farooq, Chan Mia,
Zahid Hasan and Masud Rana. Among the accused, Arman, Rubel and Kabir have
given confessional statements under section 164 in the court.
