Satkhira district Jamaat Amir and former MP Abdul Khaleq
Mandal and Khan Roknuzzaman have been awarded with death penalty for war crimes
in 1971.
Thursday (24 March) a three-member bench headed by Justice
Mohammad Shahinur Islam, chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal handed
down the verdict.
Earlier, March 22 was set as the day for the verdict.
Prosecutors Mokhlesur Rahman Badal and Rezia Sultana Chaman represented the
state in the court. Advocates Abdus Subhan Tarafdar and Gazi MH Tamim
represented the accused.
After hearing the cases of two people including Abdul Khaleq
Mandal in the case of war crimes on November 11 last year, they were kept
waiting for the verdict to be announced.
The trial of the case started on April 15, 2018 with
introductory speech and testimony.
It is learned that a formal complaint was lodged in the case
on March 19, 2017. There were four accused in the case then. Among them Khaleq
Mandal was imprisoned. The other two died. Khan Roknuzzaman is still a
fugitive.
