Padma Bridge will contribute to the country's socioeconomic development: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that the Padma Bridge will play a role in the socio-economic development of the country. The Prime Minister made the remarks at the inaugural function of Sheikh Russell Cantonment in Shariatpur after joining virtually from Ganobhaban around 10:15 am on Tuesday (March 29).

The Prime Minister said the foundation stone of the Padma Bridge was laid by the Awami League government in 2001 but it was stopped by the BNP when they came to power. After the World Bank's intervention, many thought that the construction of this bridge would not be possible. But today this bridge is real. The safety of this bridge is essential. That is why this cantonment has been built.

Sheikh Hasina thanked the Bangladesh Army for setting up a cantonment in the name of Sheikh Russell. She said that the traffic on this bridge will start very soon. So the safety of this bridge is absolutely necessary. I have taken measures for that security provision.

Sheikh Hasina said the construction of this bridge would not only improve the communication system of the southern districts, but also the socio-economic development. The construction of this bridge will increase the GDP by 1-2 percent, she added.
