Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is working
with the Government of Bangladesh on " The Project for Improvement of
comprehensive Management Capacity of Department of Public Health Engineering on
Water Supply (Phase 2) in Dhaka.
On Tuesday March 29, a Record of Discussions (R/D) has already
been signed in this regard.
Mr. Yuho Hayakawa, Chief Representative, JICA Bangladesh,
Mr. Tushar Mohon Sadhu Khan, Additional Chief Engineer, Department of Public
Health Engineering, Mr. Abu Mohammad Mohiuddin Quaderi, Joint Secretary, Local
Government Division and Muhammad Ashraf Ali Faruk, Joint Secretary, Economic
Relations Division have signed the R/D to implement the project for 3 years.
Overall, to achieve the target of SDGs Goal 6 (Ensure access
to water and sanitation for all), Government of Bangladesh is still struggling
with some challenges to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and
affordable drinking water for all in Bangladesh. For Rural and Pourashava water
supply in Bangladesh, Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) under
Local Government Division is responsible and they are taking vital role on this
matter.
The Project aims at making it sustainable for the
achievements that was made through” The Project for Improvement of
Comprehensive Management Capacity of DPHE on Water Supply (PICMaC). As a Phase
2, for example, Comprehensive Technical Guideline for Rural and Pourashava and
Water Resource Potential Maps for mainly DPHE officials are already prepared under
PICMaC so that they will be fully utilized by DPHE through further technical
support. Furthermore, based on higher demand of piped water supply in
Pourashavas, the Project will enhance the capacity of DPHE officials on O&M
of piped water supply system as well.
