The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the
judgment of the High Court dismissing the plea of Dr Jobaida Rahman, wife of
BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, dismissing a case filed by the
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) alleging acquisition of non-income assets.
A four-judge appellate bench headed by Chief Justice Hasan
Fayez Siddiqui passed the order on Wednesday (April 13th).
As a result, there is no obstacle to continue the case
against her, said ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan.
Earlier, the Appellate Division had fixed Wednesday (April
13) for the order after the hearing on April 7.
Lawyer Mohammad Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the ACC in
the court. Jobaida Rahman was represented by senior lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali.
The ACC filed the case with the Kafrul Police Station on
September 26, 2007, alleging that she owned Tk 4,81,53,561 outside the declared
income and concealed assets.
Tarique Rahman's wife Dr Jobaida Rahman and mother-in-law
Iqbal Mand Banu were accused in the case. Later in the year, the High Court
issued a rule suspending the case on the basis of Jobaida Rahman's application.
After hearing the rule, the High Court gave its verdict on April 12, 2017. The
verdict rejected the rule issued to dismiss the case. At the same time, Jobaida
Rahman was ordered to surrender to the court within eight weeks.
