The government has announced the dissolution of 61 district
councils of the country. The government has abolished these district councils
as they have expired. Until the appointment of administrators in these district
councils, the chief executive officer (CEO) or acting chief executive officer
of the council has been given the responsibility to manage the administrative
and financial powers.
On Sunday (April 17), the local government department issued
a circular signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Tanvir Azam Siddiqui.
The notification said that according to the district
councils Act, the term of 61 district councils of the country has expired 5
years from the date of the first meeting and the councils have been dissolved.
It further said that in this case, the Chief Executive
Officer / Acting Chief Executive Officer has been entrusted with the
responsibility of managing the administrative and financial powers of each District
councils in accordance with the powers conferred by Section 75 of the Act
before the appointment of Administrator by the Government as per Section 82 of
the District Councils Act.
It is mentioned in the notification that this order has been
issued with the approval of the appropriate authority.
It may be mentioned that district council elections were
held for the first time on December 28, 2016 in 61 districts of the country. The
elected officials took oath on January 11, 2017. As a result, the five-year
term of the council ended last January.
According to the district councils Act, elections are to be
held 180 days before the expiration of the term of the council.
