The deep depression in the southeastern Bay of Bengal and
nearby areas has turned into cyclone “Asani”. Distant Warning Signal No. 2 has
been issued in the country’s seaports.
Meteorologist Md. Bazlur Rashid, director of the country’s
Met Office Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), shared the information
in a special bulletin on Sunday (May 8).
The bulletin says that the deep depression over Southeast
Bay and adjoining area moved northeastwards, and intensified into a cyclonic
storm “Asani” over the same area (near LAT. 11.2°N, Long 89.3°E) at 6 am today
(Sunday, May 8) at about 1255 kms South-southeast of Chattgoram port, 1175 kms
South-southeast of Cox’s Bazar port, 1250 kms South of Mongla port, and 1205
kms South of Payra port.
The special weather bulletin also said, “It is likely to
intensify further and move in a Northwesterly direction”.
The bulletin further
states that the maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kms of the cyclonic
storm center is about 62 kph rising to 88 kph in gusts or squalls. “Sea will
remain very rough near the cyclone center,” it added.
It also added that the Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and
Payra seaports have been asked to lower the warning signal number 1, instead,
advised hoisting Distant Warning Signal No. 2.
All fishing boats and trawlers stationed in the North Bay
have been asked to proceed cautiously from near the coast. At the same time,
they have been advised not to venture into the deep sea.
