Tunisian navy rescues 81 migrants, including 32
Bangladeshis, while trying to reach Europe by sea.
These illegal immigrants were rescued from the coast of Mediterranean
Sea on Saturday (May 14). All of them are aged between 20 to 38 years old.
Among the rescued 32 are from Bangladesh, 38 are from Egypt,
10 from Sudan and 1 from Morocco, confirmed by Tunisian Navy.
According to the AFP news agency, the people rescued from
the coast are between 20 and 38 years old. One of them is a woman. The rescuers
set off from the Libyan village of Abu Kamash, about six kilometers off the
northeastern coast of Tunisia. The boat they sailed for Europe was not suitable
for sea travel and as a result, the boat was damaged on the way.
The Italian island of Lampedusa is 130 kilometers off the
coast of Tunisia. As a result, this route is very popular and widely used for
human trafficking. Last month, 542 people were arrested while crossing from Libya
to Europe. The AFP photographer said most of those arrested were Bangladeshis.
According to the International Organization for Migration,
about 2,000 migrants died or went missing in the Mediterranean in 2021. In 2020
this number was 1 thousand 401.
