Bangladesh calls for global solidarity in protecting migrants

Bangladesh has called for building global solidarity to address the human rights and protection needs of migrants. State Minister for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh Mohammad Shahriar Alam made the call.

He was invited to the Roundtable Meeting-4 of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) held at the UN Headquarters.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohammad Shahriar Alam participated in the roundtable meeting as a panelist. The meeting focused on five issues of the Global Migration Compact. They are: data, provision of information, reduction of fragility, elimination of inequality, and international cooperation.

This information was given in a press release sent from the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations on Thursday (May 19).

Addressing the meeting, State Minister Shahriar Alam emphasized the need to further enhance cooperation between the government, human rights organizations, consulates and UN agencies in order to reduce the risk and fragility of migrants, including those stranded in crisis.

The Minister of State for External Affairs highlighted the role of migrants in the socio-economic development of the host country and motherland. He called for ensuring the coordinated implementation of the Global Migration Compact and Agenda 2030. He called on all parties involved in the migration and the United Nations Migration Network to intensify their efforts.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs emphasized the need to focus on issues such as racism, racial hatred, misrepresentation, stigma, and intolerance against immigrants. He called for more global cooperation, as well as international media co-operation, to promote inclusive values and tolerance and to create a positive image of the public about migration and immigrants.

Earlier, the Minister of State for External Affairs held a bilateral meeting with the Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The meeting focused on various aspects of migration and possible cooperation at the international and national levels.
