Global Covid cases near 528 million

The overall number of Covid cases is fast approaching 528 million amid a rise in new infections in parts of the world.

According to Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count mounted to 527,683,991 while the death toll from the virus reached 6,300,331 on Monday morning.

The US has recorded 85,004,438 cases so far and 1,028,924 people have died from the virus in the country, the data shows.

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 43,136,371 on Sunday, as 2,226 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

Besides, 65 deaths were reported from the pandemic across the country since Saturday morning, taking the total death toll to 524,413.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic is “most certainly not over,” the head of the World Health Organisation, director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned Sunday, despite a decline in reported cases since the peak of the omicron wave.

In a weekly report Thursday on the global situation, WHO said the number of new COVID-19 cases appears to have stabilised after weeks of decline since late March, while the overall number of weekly deaths dropped, reports AP.
