Chhatra Dal-Chhatra League clash in Shaheed Minar area, 30 injured

Clashes broke out between Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal in the central Shaheed Minar area. At least 30 leaders and activists including senior vice-president of Chhatra Dal and organizing secretary of Central Chhatra Dal Abu Afsan Mohammad Yahya were injured in the incident.

The incident took place around 9:30 am on Tuesday (May 24). The injured are being treated at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital.

Rakibul Islam Rakib, central joint general secretary of Chhatra Dal, said, "We were entering the campus through peaceful procession from Shaheed Minar area." At that time the leaders and workers of Chhatra League stopped us and attacked us when we wanted to continue our peaceful procession. They attack us with rods, stamps, hockey streaks and knives.

He said that our senior vice-president Rashed Iqbal Khan, organizing secretary Abu Afsan Mohammad Yahya, joint convener of DU branch Ijazul Karim and member Manusura have been seriously injured in the attack and are receiving treatment at the emergency department. At least 30 leaders and activists have been injured and are receiving medical treatment. We strongly condemn this attack.

Akhter Hossain, the convener of DU Chhatra Dal, said that the BCL leaders and activists of Zahurul Haq Hall, Bangabandhu Hall and Jagannath Hall of the university attacked us. 30-40 of us are injured and hospitalized. After the treatment of the leaders and workers, we will re-enter the campus and continue the movement.
