The long-awaited Padma Bridge is expected to boost the
supply of sacrificial animals for the forthcoming Eid-ul-Azha, one of Muslims'
most important holy celebrations.
According to animal traders and farmers from the country's
southern areas, the Padma Bridge will make it easier for them to bring animals
to the capital before Eid, and as a result they expect to sell more animals
this year.
They told that they no longer would have to spend hours for
ferries at different terminals, nor their animals would fall sick or die during
lengthy journeys.
However, the price would not fall, even if the demand for
sacrificial animals increase, they said.
Padma Bridge’s high toll is a big reason why the prices for
sacrificial animals might increase this year.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Meat Traders Association President Md
Rabiul Islam said transport costs had already increased in the country due to
rising fuel prices.
“Recently the price of animal feed has gone up, and wages of
workers at farms have increased due to the increasing prices of daily
commodities. So there is no chance to reduce the price of sacrificial animals
this year,” he added.
However, in this regard, Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM
Rezaul Karim said there will be no crisis in the Eid market for sacrificial
animals, and the unsold animals will also be added to this year’s market.
According to the Department of Livestock Services, some
2,823,523 sacrificial animals remained unsold last year, resulting in huge
financial losses for farmers and traders.
