The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named all-rounder
Shakib Al Hasan as the new captain of the Bangladesh Test team. Liton Kumar Das
has also been named as the co-captain of the Test team. The matter was reported
on Thursday (June 2).
After Mominul Haque decided to step down as the test captain
of Bangladesh national cricket team the topic of selecting a new captain came
under discussion. After discussion BCB has given him the responsibility of test
captain. Tiger all-rounder is going to captain the Test team for the third term
from the upcoming tour of West Indies.
Muminul Haque got the Test captaincy in 2019 after Shakib
was banned. Under his leadership there has been no significant success except a
Test win against New Zealand at Mount Manganui. His batting performance was not
up to the mark during his captaincy period.
He was strongly criticized after the Sri Lanka series. Finally,
he ended the criticism himself. On May 31, he informed the BCB president that
he does not want to be the captain anymore. Applauding his decision, the
country's cricket governing body started searching the new captain.
Earlier, Shakib got Test captaincy for the first time in
2009 after Mashrafe bin Mortuza was injured. During that period till 2011 he played
9 test matches as captain and won one. Then in 2018 Mushfiqur Rahim was
replaced by Tiger all-rounder. He led in 5 more Tests till he was banned in
2019. Where the team won two matches. In all, in the previous two terms, Shakib
has won 3 out of 11 defeats in 14 Tests.
