A court has sentenced seven people to life imprisonment in
the murder case of an Awami League leader named Ahsan Ullah in Laxmipur. At the
same time, each of the convicts was fined Tk 10,000 and sentenced to one more
year imprisonment for non-payment.
District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Rahibul Islam handed
down the verdict around 11:30 am on Thursday (June 16).
Laxmipur Judge Court Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate Jasim
Uddin confirmed the matter.
Although one convict named Sumon was present in the court at
that time, other convicts are still fugitive. The other convicts are Murad,
Zakir Hossain, Ripon, Nishan, Kamal and Alamgir.
The deceased was Ahsan Ullah, a resident of Nandi village in
Bashikpur union of Sadar district, a fruit seller and vice-president of Awami
League.
According to court sources, Ahsan was returning home after
selling fruits from Habibullah's shop in Poddar Bazar on the night of July 26,
2014. He was hacked and shot dead by a gang on his way back. His son Mohammad
Alam filed a case with the police station. Later on June 26, 2015, the police
filed a report in the court accusing 7 people. After a long hearing and taking
evidence, the judge sentenced six people to life imprisonment and fine in the
case.
