Rifat sworn in as Comilla city mayor

Arfanul Haque Rifat has been sworn in as the new mayor of the Comilla City Corporation. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually administered the oath from her Ganabhaban residence on Tuesday.

All the elected councilors were also sworn in the same day. Local Government Minister Tajul Islam administered their oath at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital.

Comilla city election polling was held on 15 June.

Arfanul Haque Rifat, a boat symbol candidate, was elected as the new mayor of Comilla after defeating independent mayoral candidate Monirul Haque by a small margin of 343 votes.

Awami League candidate Arfanul Haque Rifat got 50,310 votes in the election. His nearest rival Monirul Haque (Sakku) got 49,967 votes.

On June 23, the Bangladesh Election Commission published a gazette announcing the election of Awami League nominee Rifat, who had won the mayoral post in the Comilla city election.
