In Durgabati area of Shyamnagar in Satkhira, the dam of
Kholpetua river broke and water entered the locality and flooded 15 villages.
At least 25,000 people in the surrounding area including Burigoalini Union are
trapped in water, causing is a shortage of food and fresh food.
Zakir Hossain, sub-divisional engineer of Shyamnagar region
of the Water Development Board, said that the 40-meter dam collapsed into the
river due to the overflowing of the Kholpetua river. We will provide 160-meter
ring dam. Bamboo piling is in progress. However, due to high tide, the work is
progressing slowly. 15 thousand geobags and 1 lakh synthetic bags are ready for
dam construction. We hope to be able to stop the water within a day or two.
Shyamnagar upazila executive officer Akter Hossain said that
the embankment work is ongoing. Upazila administration is providing dry food
and water to the flood victims. A water plant has already been commissioned to
solve the fresh water crisis. Moreover, various NGOs and voluntary
organizations are providing clean drinking water. Hopefully we will overcome
this situation very soon.
