A writ has been filed in the High Court challenging the
legality of the increase in the prices of fuel oil, diesel, petrol and octane.
The writ sought suspension, cancellation and withdrawal of the gazette issued
by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources increasing the price of oil.
Supreme Court Lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ
on Monday (August 8).
The writ petition may be heard in the High Court bench of
Justice Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Kazi Md Izarul Haque Akand.
Energy Secretary, Energy Deputy Secretary and Chairman of
BERC have been made respondents in the writ.
Last Friday (August 5) night, the Ministry of Power, Energy
and Mineral Resources issued a notification to increase the price of fuel in
the country citing the dollar crisis and the increase in prices in the world
market.
According to a press release of the Ministry of Power,
Energy and Mineral Resources, the retail price (1 liter) of diesel and kerosene
will be Tk 114, Octane Tk 135 and Petrol Tk 130 within 40 km of the depot after
12 midnights. Before that, kerosene and diesel was sold at Tk 80, octane at Tk
89 and petrol at Tk 86 per litre.
