The opposition Bangladesh
Nationalist Party (BNP) is constantly holding various meetings. At one hand,
they openly hold meetings with various political parties about unified
movement. Besides, they have regular contacts and informal meetings with civil
society representatives. On the other hand, they also maintain regular
communication with foreign embassies. BNP wants to take not only political
parties but also civil society and the western world to put pressure on the
government. The meetings are being held for that purpose. 3 teams have been
created in BNP. A team led by Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, General Secretary of
the party. The team is meeting with political parties. On the other hand, a
team led by Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is talking to various representatives
of civil society. Reports of several meetings between honorary Fellow of CPD Debapriya
Bhattacharya and with Amir Khosru Mahmud have been emerged. It has also been
confirmed that Amir Khosru Mahmud had a meeting with BRAC Chairperson Hossain
Zillur Rahman. On the other hand, A third team headed by Dr. Moin Khan was
tasked with meeting with foreign embassies. Dr. Moin Khan last Thursday night invited
some diplomats to his residence for dinner and held a meeting with them. The
first meeting is for formal media briefings only. The remaining two meetings
are being followed with some secrecy.
Several sources of BNP
say that through these meetings, they want to create a common outline for the
fall of the government. They are trying to give different explanations as to
why this government needs change. And that is why all these meetings are being
kept confidential. BNP has now changed its tune in meetings with civil society
and foreign embassies. They feel that there is no harm even if BNP does not
come to power at the moment. They don't even want to go to power. They only
want to oust the Awami League government. As they are seeking the support of
civil society to oust the Awami League government, they are also seeking the
support of Western countries. Another source says that civil society is now in
close contact with BNP. Their aim is to report the government's mistakes to the
BNP. As if BNP holds these messages and conveys them to the people.
A civil society
representative said that all the information they are providing is being
published in the media. But a large number of common people do not know. This
is why they are using BNP as a vehicle. BNP is now using all the information
that the civil servants are giving in. The question arises that if BNP does not
want to come to power, then what does BNP want? In response to this, a leader
of BNP says that now the main task of BNP is to remove the current government
from power. According to the BNP leader, many reforms have to be done after ousting
the current govt. Various processes including amendment of the constitution
remain unfinished. An election can only be held after these processes are
completed. So, does the BNP want to bring another third party to power or an
unelected government? In response to such questions, at least two BNP leaders
say yes. They feel that there is no possibility of direct transfer of power
from Awami League to BNP. Accepting this, they are communicating with different
circles. However, various sources say that the BNP has withdrawn from the
intention of power because the western countries have asked various questions
about the leadership of the BNP, especially what will happen if the BNP comes
to power under the leadership of Tarek. Rather, BNP is now saying that we do
not want power, we only want the government to fall.
