6.2-magnitude earthquake hits Papua, Indonesia

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the West Papua region of Indonesia on Saturday morning. However, there is no danger of a tsunami, says the country’s geological organization BMKG.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said, “A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia’s Papua region Saturday morning and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude quake minutes later”.

Both quakes hit at a depth of 15 kilometers (9.3 miles), about 272 kilometers from the town of Abepura. There were no immediate damage or casualties, reports Reuters.

Earlier on Saturday, quakes with magnitudes of 6.1, 5.9 and 5.5-magnitude struck near the same location.

Noted that Indonesia straddles the “Pacific Ring of Fire”, where different tectonic plates of the Earth's crust meet and create frequent seismic activity.
