"We are capable of providing medical care to Begum Zia"

Professor Dr. M. Sharfuddin Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), stated that in Bangladesh, all types of medical treatments are possible, and the availability of all forms of healthcare is within our country. We are fully capable of providing all forms of healthcare right here. If someone wishes to bring foreign doctors here to provide treatment, that is also feasible. Prior to her current treatment at Evercare Hospital, Khaleda Zia received medical treatment at BSMMU. However, if she desires to receive treatment here again, we are prepared for it.

He explained that complex medical procedures like liver transplants are indeed possible here. We have the capability to perform them. If necessary, we can bring in specialists from India to work in collaboration with our experts. Whether it's possible to treat Begum Khaleda Zia abroad or not, I don't think there's any need for it. In my opinion, this is entirely politically motivated, and the way they are portraying it as if many rare diseases can only be treated abroad is not accurate. We are capable of providing international-standard medical care here.

Dr. M. Sharfuddin Ahmed also addressed questions about discouraging people from seeking medical treatment abroad. He mentioned that many people used to go abroad for medical treatment, including for marriage purposes. However, due to COVID-19, everyone received treatment here. Therefore, we have proven that we can handle such cases.

He emphasized that our healthcare system is competent, and while there may be some individuals who have done wrong, it does not represent the entire healthcare system of the country. If Begum Khaleda Zia is admitted to BSMMU, a board of highly skilled experts will be formed for her treatment. If the board suggests that two specialists from abroad are needed for her treatment, we can arrange for them to come here.

Dr. M. Sharfuddin Ahmed also discussed the health issues Begum Khaleda Zia faced during her admission to BSMMU. She had problems with diabetes control, pain in her knees, and high blood pressure, all of which were age-related issues.
