The World Health Organization (WHO) is a collaborative agency of the United Nations that plays a role in coordinating international efforts in public health. Among its extensive activities, the WHO provides advice on general health services, conducts risk assessments in public health, coordinates responses in health emergencies, and promotes the dissemination of information on human health and well-being globally. It assists countries with technological support, sets international health standards and guidelines, and collects data on global health through the World Health Survey, providing comprehensive health statistics for all nations. Saima Wazed, as the first Bangladeshi Regional Director of this organization, assumes the responsibility with congratulations on taking the oath in Geneva. In her statement after taking the oath, she emphasizes three key areas in the development of health in South-East Asia: improvement in mental health care, development of children and women, and the use of technology.

Similar to many physical illnesses, mental health issues have also gained special attention and importance in recent times, especially due to prolonged neglect. Mental and physical health are intertwined; they are not separate entities. Mental, physical, and social functionalities are interdependent. Current societal and economic disparities, prolonged conflicts, violence, and urgent public health situations collectively impact mental health. It is essential to be aware of and conscientious about mental health, just as one would be about other health conditions. In the context of South-East Asia's healthcare landscape, increasing awareness about mental health will help eliminate stigmas and discrimination. For mentally unwell individuals, the support of their family and community is crucial. In such cases, there should be a focus on community-based rehabilitation. Simultaneously, emphasis must be placed on the quality of services and the referral system in community clinics. Renowned mental health expert Saima Wazed's strong and visionary leadership will propel health programs in this region to advance even further.

Under the visionary leadership of the honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has embarked on a path of rapid development through her courageous and effective development strategies. As a result of her bold initiatives, the country has experienced overall economic growth, infrastructural transformation, and remarkable social progress. Inspired by the dream of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to make us a self-respecting nation, today, the Bangabandhu's daughter, the visionary stateswoman, is translating that dream into reality one after another. Bangabandhu's granddaughter and the Prime Minister's daughter, Saima Wazed, is taking Bangladesh, and consequently, the health sector of the South-East Asian region, to new heights. In this unique endeavor, we, the healthcare professionals, stand ready to collaborate and support her in achieving unparalleled success in healthcare services.
