Dr. Muhammad Yunus, chairman of Grameen Telecom, winner of
the Nobel Peace Prize, has filed a petition in the High Court challenging the validity
of a case alleging violation of labor laws. The matter is pending before the
High Court bench of Justice MD Habibul Gani and Justice MD Riaz Uddin Khan.
This information was given by Assistant Attorney General
Mahfuzur Rahman Likhan on Sunday (December 12).
Arifuzzaman, the labor inspector of the Department of
Inspection for Factories and Establishments, filed the case against Dr. Yunus
and four others at the Third Labor Court in Dhaka on September 9.
Apart from Dr. Yunus, MD Mohammad Ashraful Hasan, Director
Nurjahan Begum, and MD Shahjahan have also been named as defendants in the case.
The three have also applied separately. Complaints were
lodged under Sections 6, 7, 118, and 234 of 4 of the Labor Act for non-payment
of fixed dividend to the Workers Welfare Foundation, not to make the jobs of
the workers permanent, not to cash the public holidays.
According to the complaint, officials from the Department of
Inspection for Factories and Establishments visited Dr. Yunus' Grameen Telecom.
There they saw some violations of labor laws. Of these, 101 workers and
employees were supposed to be made permanent but they were not. Workers'
participation fund and welfare fund have not been formed. In addition, 5 percent
of the company's dividend was supposed to be paid to the workers, but it was
not paid to them. On the basis of these allegations, a case was filed against
the persons concerned under criminal law.
