8 sentenced to death for killing army solider Saif in Jhenaidah

Khulna court has sentenced 8 people to death for killing army member Saiful Islam Saif. At the same time, each of them has been fined Tk 50,000. Judge Nazrul Islam Hawlader of the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict on Wednesday afternoon. The three accused were absconding when the verdict was announced. The convicts sentenced to death are Hakimul Islam, Mizanur Rahman, Faruk Hossain, Abbas, Matiar Rahman (fugitive), Kaishem, Dahlim (fugitive), and Moktar (fugitive).

The accused were taken to the court from the jail around 9.30 am. Earlier, the argument ended in court on November 12. Defendant's lawyer Syed Tawfiq Ullah said, "There are no eyewitnesses to the killings. The verdict was announced on the testimony of only one person. The police have taken a statement after torturing him inhumanely. This verdict has done injustice to the accused. We will go to the high court. We will get justice from there. '

Saiful Islam, 32, was hacked to death by a group of men on August 18, 2018. He was assigned to the Ghatail Cantonment Medical Corps in Tangail.

Back then, his brother Monirul Islam said, “My brother and I were returning from his [Saiful] in-laws’ house in Badarganj on a motorcycle around 10:30pm.

“A group of robbers had placed a tree on the Haonghata road to block our way. We tried to escape but the robbers caught us and hacked my brother mercilessly.”

Saiful was declared dead when taken to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital in critical condition.

The victim’s father, Habibur Rahman, filed a case against five-six unnamed persons with Jhenaidah Sadar police station the next day.

Then on June 30, 2019, Inspector Md Mohsin Hossain of Jhenaidah police station, the investigating officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against eight people to the court.
