The women's football team landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 1:40pm today (21 September). State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel received the team at the airport; a cake was cut at the airport to celebrate the team's victory.

Before the flight arrived in Dhaka, thousands of supporters arrived in groups and waited outside Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. They were shouting slogans, congratulating the girls.

The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women's Championship winners have reached Dhaka after their highly celebrated victory in Nepal.

SAFF winning team is all set to rally across town with a victory parade featuring an open-top bus all the way to the Bangladesh Football Federation house in Motijheel.

The girls clinched their maiden South Asian Football Federation Women's Cup by beating Nepal 3-1 on 19 September. Bangladesh scored 23 goals in the event and conceded only one in the final.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Wednesday (21 September) announced a cash reward of Tk50 lakh for the Bangladesh Women's football team. BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon lauded the success of the women footballers.

"The women's football team has made the whole nation proud with its exceptional performance and historic achievement. As a mark of our appreciation and support for their effort, I am declaring Tk50 lakh for the entire team on behalf of the BCB," Papon was quoted in the BCB statement.

"I have no doubts that the SAFF triumph will greatly inspire sportsmen and women around the country and sports teams to strive for international glory in respective disciplines," he added.

On 19 September, State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel announced the plans to organise the reception after the Bangladesh girls clinched their maiden South Asian Football Federation Women's Cup by beating Nepal 3-1.

Taijul spins Tigers to 150-run win against New Zealand in 1st Test

Publish: 12:23 PM, 02 Dec, 2023

Bangladesh registered a landmark 150-run victory against New Zealand to go up 1-0 in two-match series, thanks to left-arm spinner Taijul Islam who spun the New Zealand batters in a gem of performance at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today.

Taijul ended with a match-figure of 10-184, his second 10-wicket haul in a Test match to emulate Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz as New Zealand found them wanting in a relentless spin attack.

Unlike the victory against Australia and England, which came in a rage turner in Mirpur, the win was scripted in a better pitch which offered something for pacers, spinners and batters.

But Bangladesh, which has been at its lowest ebb following a disastrous World Cup performance and came into the game without as many five first choice players, showed a performance of ages to take the match in their favour.

Taijul followed his 4-109 with 6-75 in the second innings to wrap up New Zealand innings for 181 in the first session of day five, while chasing a target of 332.

Offspinner Nayeem Hasan complemented him with 2-40 while pacer Shoriful Islam (1-13) and offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1-44) took the rest of the two wickets.

Daryl Mitchell battled lonely to top-score for the visitors with 58.

Bangladesh went into the fifth and final day of the game, needing just three wickets to complete the inevitable. But resuming at 113-7 and requiring 219 runs, Mitchell's presence gave New Zealand a slim hope for an unlikely victory given the fact that Sylhet pitch normally behaves well in the morning session.

Mitchell struck Taijul a boundary through mid-off in the third ball of the day before punching the same bowler for a single through cover to raise his ninth 50 off 99 balls. Tension rose as he batted with ease as a testament that pitch had no demons.

He looked confident against spinners and repeatedly swept them to keep the scoreboard moving.

However, probably the overconfidence got the better of him as a sweep shot against offspinner Nayeem Hasan brought his dismissal, ending New Zealand's any kind of hope of saving the game.

Skipper Tim Southee played an attacking 34 off 24 with one four and two sixes before Taijul dismissed him to complete his 12th five-for.

Taijul then fittingly wrapped up New Zealand innings when Ish Sodhi who made a laborious 22 off 91, popped a simple catch to Zakir Hasan at silly mid-off.

Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy made 86 as Bangladesh were bowled out 310 in its first innings but New Zealand earned a 7-run lead, compiling 317, courtesy to a brilliant 104 of Kane Williamson.

Najmul Hossain Shanto then became first Bangladesh cricketer to hit a century on debut as captain to lead Bangladesh to 338 in second innings, setting a dauting 332-run target for the visitors on an increasingly deteriorating pitch.

His century paved the way for Bangladesh's only second and first victory at home against New Zealand.

The second and final Test begins on December 6 at Mirpur.

No Tamim Iqbal as Bangladesh announce World Cup squad; Mahmudullah included

Publish: 09:01 PM, 26 Sep, 2023

Bangladesh's veteran opening batter, Tamim Iqbal, has been omitted from the 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, as announced by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday. Meanwhile, experienced batter Mahmudullah has secured his spot in the team.

The squad selection process generated considerable discussion, with several players being automatic choices. Tamim Iqbal, despite not being in peak physical condition, seemed like a surefire inclusion, especially after his confident return to international cricket with a fluent 44 against New Zealand.

However, reports emerged in local media just a day before the squad announcement, suggesting that Tamim had informed the management of his inability to play in all nine group matches of the tournament due to his fitness concerns. These reports reportedly left Shakib Al Hasan, the team's star all-rounder and captain, dissatisfied, even to the point where he contemplated stepping down as captain. Ultimately, the selectors decided against picking Tamim.

In a noteworthy development, Nafees Iqbal, Tamim's elder brother and the team's logistics manager, left the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium during Bangladesh's third ODI against New Zealand, and it appears he was removed from his post at Shakib's request.

The squad features some fresh faces as well, with Tanzid Hasan, who made his international debut in the recently-concluded Asia Cup, and Tanzim Hasan Sakib, the promising fast bowler who impressed in his debut against India in the Asia Cup, earning their spots.

Bangladesh used the ongoing New Zealand series as an opportunity to experiment and assess potential options for the World Cup. Unlike most other teams, the selectors refrained from announcing a provisional squad, keeping fans and experts in suspense until just a couple of days before the ICC's deadline.

Mahmudullah, who had been absent from the ODI side for a considerable period, finally earned a place in the team after lower-order batters failed to make their mark in recent series. Mahmudullah's performance in the New Zealand series proved crucial, as he top-scored with a 76-ball-49 in the second ODI amid a batting collapse.

The spin duo of Nasum Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan also secured their spots in the squad after delivering strong performances in the latter part of the Asia Cup and the early stages of the New Zealand ODIs.

Soumya Sarkar, on the other hand, auditioned for a role but struggled, recording a duck in the second ODI against New Zealand before being dropped from the squad for the third game.

The finalized squad for the World Cup comprises the following players: Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim (wicketkeeper), Towhid Hridoy, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Tanzid Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam, Mahedi Hasan, Nasum Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib.
